Is your nonprofit organization ready to participate in the biggest online giving day of the year? #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many nonprofit organizations focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving. You can get more information @ https://www.givingtuesday.org/. Here’s what you need to do to get ready to participate:
- Your nonprofit corporation must be recognized by your state, have an operating Board of Directors & have been awarded the 501(c)(3) status. You will want your donors to get the tax benefit for charitable contributions that is only available to them when they give to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
- Have an established charitable contributions procedure. Here’s the link for the FREE Charitable Contributions published by the IRS: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p1771.pdf
- Make sure your nonprofit organization is registered with your state’s Charitable Solicitations Office. This is an often neglected step in the formation process. Most states maintain a registry of organizations that are licensed to solicit donations within the state. The purpose of requiring a license to solicit funds is to protect consumers from fraudulent activity. Each state has its own statutory filing requirements and possible exemptions to filing. It is highly recommended that your nonprofit organization complete the required filing before soliciting funds to be compliant with state law.
